Beyond Zero Emissions commends the federal government’s news that an additional $150 million will be spent in clean hydrogen industrial hubs, stating that this will provide a solid basis for Renewable Energy Industrial Precincts. “Today’s clean hydrogen industrial centers announcement is a critical step toward reindustrializing our areas with clean manufacturing and unleashing Australia’s potential as a clean export powerhouse,” said Tom Quinn, Beyond Zero Emissions’ Head of Policy and Research.
“Government assistance in de-risking green hydrogen investment is critical to producing thousands of new regional employment and diversifying our regional economies.” Beyond Zero Emissions research has demonstrated the immense job and economic possibilities of investing in Renewable Energy Industrial Precincts. Precinct establishment in the Hunter and Gladstone precincts would result in 45,000 new continuing employment, an additional $13 billion in yearly income in the Hunter and Gladstone areas alone, and the attraction of new sectors and tens of billions of dollars in investment money. Creating a clean hydrogen industrial cluster in these regional areas is a critical first step.
“Green hydrogen is a vital component for Australia’s heavy industry’s future, including the manufacture of green ammonia, green steel, and the generation of high temperatures required in industrial and manufacturing operations.” Importantly, the government must guarantee that funds are committed to update industrial facilities so that they can accommodate hydrogen. Onshore usage of green hydrogen in our industrial hubs will generate more employment, keep exporters competitive in a low-carbon future, and keep more of the financial rewards in Australia.
“A concerted effort is also necessary to modernise electrical transmission to connect our industrial centres, such as the Hunter, Latrobe Valley, and Gladstone, to the plentiful and competitive energy in Australia’s designated Renewable Energy Zones.” This announcement of an additional $150 million for clean hydrogen industrial centres is an important first step toward achieving a zero-carbon economy.”
