According to the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World report, issued yearly by the periodical Corporate Knights, Iberdrola has been named one of the world’s most sustainable utilities. Ignacio Galán’s firm is also one of the top 25 in the world, and the first Spanish company in this position.
Corporate Knights is a media and financial research firm known for offering unrivaled ESG (environmental, social, and governance) information, aims, and analysis. It enables considerable involvement with many of the world’s most prominent corporate, governmental, and investment decision-makers, transforming the brand into a synonym for sustainability.
Ranking in the Global 100 is a testament to a company’s sustainability performance and has been shown to boost investor confidence. Since its debut over seventeen years ago, the firms in the Global 100 index have beaten the MSCI ACWI benchmark index on average.
To construct the list of the world’s 100 most sustainable firms, more than 8,000 publicly traded companies with revenues of more than USD 1 billion were examined, and those that emit carbon, obstruct climate policy, or cause excessive deforestation were excluded.
After making this decision, Corporate Knights examines 24 factors pertaining to resource management, people, financial management, revenue and green investments, and supplier performance.
Iberdrola is not only a pioneer in all of these sectors, but has also outlined concrete objectives and investments to continue progressing in the next years. In its 2020-2025 strategy, the firm anticipates 75 billion euros in investments for energy transition through additional renewable projects, smart grids, and large-scale storage systems, with a total investment of 150 billion euros by 2030.
With CO2/kWh emissions currently, two-thirds lower than the European average, Iberdrola’s plan of investing in clean energy and infrastructure will lead to the firm becoming “carbon neutral” in Europe by 2030.
Iberdrola is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, MSCI, CDP, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg GEI, Euronext Vigeo Eiris indices, EcoVadis, and other major international sustainability indices, including the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, MSCI, CDP, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg GEI, Euronext Vigeo Eiris indices, EcoVadis, and others.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)
Iberdrola has incorporated the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2030 horizon into its business strategy and sustainability policy, and is a benchmark for its direct contribution to the global goals, highlighting its contributions in the fields of energy and climate change.
The company focuses its efforts on providing affordable and clean energy (goal 7) and climate action (goal 13), while also directly contributing to ensuring clean water and sanitation (goal 6), increasing its investment in R&D&I activities (goal 9), encouraging respect for the life of terrestrial ecosystems (goal 15), and working to build partnerships to achieve the goals (goal 17).
Iberdrola has consistently demonstrated its commitment to decreasing emissions in order to combat climate change and advance the economy toward decarbonization. The company’s goal is to reduce CO2 emissions intensity to 50 gCO2/kWh by 2030, a 73 percent reduction from 2015, and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
